Carefully remove your scale from the outer carton, and place the apparatus on a clean level surface for initial use. Remove the (black) gasket from beneath the weigh pan to begin. This will allow the weigh pan and pointer to move freely. Set all slides to zero, ensuring that the center and rear slides are properly positioned in the grooves provided. If necessary, adjust the knob located to the left of the weigh pan to bring the pointer to rest at zero. Always adjust the scale properly to zero before weighing anything.
Begin by zeroing the scale per the procedure above. Add the object to be weighed to the stainless steel pan. Begin by adjusting the slide in the rear (unless weighing items under 10g - simply adjust the slide in front for those), moving it one notch at a time to see if pointer will move down toward zero. If the pointer moves down, move the slide in the rear back one notch, and adjust the front slide until the pointer rests at zero. If you move the slide in the rear all the way to the right (100g), and the pointer still does not move, then return it to zero and start moving the slide in the center. Move the slide in the center one notch at a time until the pointer moves. If the pointer moves down, move the slide in the center back one notch, and adjust the rear and front slider until the pointer rests at zero. If you move the slide in the center all the way to the right (500g), and the pointer still does not move, then return it to zero and begin adding counter weights. Begin counter weight addition by adding the 500g counter weight to the rear hanger tab, and repeating the procedure above. If the pointer does not move, add the 1000g counter weight to the front hanger tab, and repeat the procedure above. If the pointer still does not move, add the 1000g counter weight to the rear hanger tab (replacing the 500g), and repeat the procedure above. If the pointer fails to move down after adding the second 1000g weight, you have exceeded the capacity of the scale (2610g).
Note: When the scale pointer finds zero in the weighing procedure above, simply add the weights shown together on all three slides (beginning with the center slide and ending with the front) to determine the weight of the item being measured. If counter weights were employed, add the weight of those as well.
Always take care to clean the scale thoroughly with a soft cloth between use. Additionally, periodic cleaning with compressed air is recommended. Compressed air should be directed at recessed surfaces that tend to build up dust and other debris. Care should be exercised when using compressed air to ensure that face and eyes are properly protected during use.
The most typical problem initially encountered upon preparing the scale for the first use is that the scale will not zero. After turning the zero adjust knob fully in both directions, the pointer still does not come to rest on zero. This is commonly caused by the shifting of weight in the weigh pan during transport. Correcting this problem is simple. Start by identifying if weight needs to be added or removed. If the pointer is coming to rest below (most common problem) the zero line, you will need to add weight. If the pointer is coming to rest above the zero line, you will need to remove weight. After you determine if weight should be added or removed, simply turn the stainless weigh pan counterclockwise on its base. You will need to place one hand securely around the tan weigh cup located directly below the stainless weigh pan, while turning the stainless pan in a counterclockwise direction with the other. A small paperclip is the most commonly used weight employed to add weight.
Another less typical problem is that the pointer sticks. This can be corrected by loosening the nut on the main bolt located on the underside of the scale base. Turn the scale over gently on a soft surface, and loosen the nut underneath. Turn the scale over, and move the scale forward or backward until the pointer moves freely and is centered between the magnets. Turn the scale over and tighten the nut, making sure not to disturb the pointer position.
